grace prevatt
Grace was born on April 23rd, 2001 in Greensboro, North Carolina to Jenny & Tom Prevatt. Jenny enjoyed a normal pregnancy briefly disturbed by a preterm labor at 31 week which was brought under control with the usual rest and pre term drugs. Deliver was by c-section due to the fact that Grace was on a breech position in uterus. She had an unusual fetal position which caused Grace hip problems. At 4 months and 8 month of age she had hip surgery which caused her to wear a body cast for most of her first year of age.
Grace's parents started to suspect that she had a neurological problem when she was around 6 month old. She was missing her milestones. Her doctor said that she was developing slowly but that she would catch on. When she reached one year of age, the doctor finally suggested that Grace see a neurologist. Genetically all was normal and the Prevatts' got a vague diagnosis for their baby's condition: Pervasive Developmental Disorder. This condition is a catch-all-you-can't-figure-out diagnosis.
Grace attends a special needs children's school where she gets PT, OT and speech therapies. However, looking for more, the Prevatts' did research that lead them to discover Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and how it is helping children with different neurological problems. Their search for a center led to the Ocean Hyperbaric Neurological Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida which they found out had ties with Therapies 4 Kids, a clinic where Grace could greatly benefit with the addition of Intensive Pediatric Therapy in conjunction with the THERASUIT method. The Prevatts' learned about Bright Steps Forward through T4K and decided to raise funds to provide these innovative, but expensive, therapies for Grace.
With the backup of Bright Steps Forward, the Prevatts' decided to do a dinner as fundraising. They got a room at their local church and food donated by Carrabba's Italian Grill Restaurant. They printed invitations and send them to friends and family all over the country. They also send the invitations online to as many persons they could think about. They didn't put a price on the dinner, just donations. On the invitation the Prevatts' had a line that encouraged those who couldn't attend but wanted to help, to send their donation. The Prevatts' experienced an overwhelming, joyful surprise when before the dinner date they had already received more than $5,000 in donations from all over the country. It seemed that the Prevatt's friends had handed the invitation to other friends and so on. In addition, 200 people attended Grace's dinner on July 18, 2006 and gave donations varying from $10 to $500 to Grace's cause. On July 31, 2006 Grace started, for the first time, both Intensive Pediatric Therapy in conjunction with the THERASUIT and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In three weeks from now, when Grace finishes her three weeks of intensive therapies we will tell you more about Grace's experiences in Therapies 4 Kids and Ocean Hyperbaric Neurological Center.
Grace chance for a quality, independent life lies in her opportunity for continued therapy. Please continue to contribute to Grace's therapy.
