June is National Aphasia Awareness Month
Aphasia is a communication or speech disorder usually resulting from a brain injury. People with aphasia either have difficulty understanding words (receptive language disorder) or have difficulty speaking themselves (expressive language disorder). In adults, aphasia is most commonly caused by strokes, but in children, aphasia can be the result of stroke, epilepsy, brain tumor, brain injury, autism, hearing loss, or learning disabilities. Some people with aphasia are able to use language appropriately but are unable to repeat back words, some leave out words and others add unnecessary words to their sentences.
